The name means "the abode of clouds" describes the climatic phenomenon that brings torrents of rain to its mountainous region. Situated in the North East of India, Meghalaya is bounded by Assam in the north and east, and the plains of Bangladesh in the south and west. Meghalaya is marked out as a separate state with the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills. All three tribes follow the matrilineal system of society. English is the official language of Meghalaya.
